The 17th overall pick of the 2012 first-year player draft, Davis never made it to the Double-A level, as he had stalled out at High-A Dunedin over parts of the past three seasons. His pedigree should be enough to earn him a look from another organization, but as a 23-year-old with a career .242/.315/.348 line in the minors, Davis' career could be on life support.

One of the Blue Jays’ top dozen prospects coming into the season, Davis is an interesting prospect. After his first season in Low-A Lansing didn’t go as planned, Davis spent the 2015 season at the same level. With another season in the Midwest League under his belt, Davis improved significantly. After hitting .213 in 2014, Davis bumped his batting average up to .282. On the basepaths, after being caught stealing 20 times in 39 attempts in 2014, Davis stole 21 bases while only being caught 10 times in 2015. However, for someone with the speed that Davis possesses, a 67.7% success rate is too low. He also lowered his strikeout totals, striking out 48 fewer times in 12 more plate appearances. Davis could start in High-A Dunedin this season, a step up from Lansing, but for one of the top prospects in the organization, many might have hoped for a faster track for the former 17th overall pick (2012).
A first-round selection out of high school in the 2012 draft, Davis got his first taste of a full-season league in 2014, and it did not go well. The 21-year-old spent the entire season in the Midwest League at Low-A Lansing, an admittedly difficult hitting environment, and slashed .213/.268/.316 in 542 plate appearances. He posted solid counting stats (eight home runs and 19 steals), but that is to be expected from an elite athlete like Davis. His approach at the plate is what will make or break him as a prospect. For someone with 80-grade speed, a .299 BABIP is pretty troubling and the 30.8% strikeout rate demonstrates the amount of swing-and-miss in his game. Davis may have lost confidence as the season went on. His slash line dipped to just .198/.250/.283 in the second half, signaling that he may be sent back to repeat the level in 2015.
A first-round pick in the 2012 MLB Draft, Davis had a disappointing 2013 campaign with rookie league Bluefield, failing to show any meaningful signs of improvement. His .240/.323/.418 line was quite similar to what he produced in rookie ball the previous season, though it should still be good enough to ensure that Davis begins 2014 at a full-season A-ball affiliate. The 20-year-old outfielder's contact skills are particularly concerning, after 29.5% of his 2013 plate appearances ended in a strikeout. Despite the disappointing early returns, Davis is still young enough to turn things around.
Davis was selected 17th overall by Toronto in the 2012 amateur draft. Davis is an elite athlete with top level speed, stealing 25 bases in 60 minor league games. While he is still raw, he has shown the ability to take a walk, a skill the Blue Jays hope will make him stand out and move quickly in their system. Considering that he's just 19 and on the brink of his first full professional season, Davis is likely three-plus years away from getting onto the big league radar.
