The Blue Jays released Biagini from his minor-league contract Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Biagini was cut loose after he submitted a 3.46 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 7.7 K-BB% across 39 innings with Triple-A Buffalo. The 32-year-old right-hander should be able to find work in another organization, but he may face an uphill battle to get another look in the majors in 2022.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
NL East club interested
PToronto Blue Jays
July 29, 2019
The Braves are talking with the Blue Jays about Biagini, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander joins closer Ken Giles and fellow setup man Daniel Hudson in Toronto's reliever trade winds. The 29-year-old has one save, a 3.75 ERA, 9.0 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 in 48 appearances for Toronto, who's looking to cash out on its bullpen arms as it continues its rebuild. Biagini probably wouldn't end up in save opportunities if he's dealt to another club, but if Giles and Hudson leave and Biagini sticks around, he could be the top closer for the Jays as they play out the string.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2017
There was some hope for Biagini heading into the 2018 campaign after he outpitched his peripherals and finished the season prior with a respectable 4.27 FIP. In the end, Biagini saw his FIP increase more than a run to 5.47 while his ERA ballooned to an ugly 6.00. He struggled both as a starter (7.71 ERA in four starts) and a reliever (5.40 ERA in 46 relief appearances) and now looks more like a minor leaguer than a back-end starter. The Blue Jays' rebuild means that innings will be open, but the 28-year-old hasn't done much to stake a claim on them. He avoided walks well (7.3% walk rate) but struck out just 16.2% of batters, and his previously strong groundball rate fell to an unremarkable 47.9%. Barring a sudden and significant performance improvement, Biagini won't be worth a second look in most formats.
Biagini's 3-13 record and 5.34 ERA tell a troubling tale, but a deeper look provides reason for optimism moving forward. Bad luck factored into the surface stats, with an exceedingly-low 61.5 percent left-on-base rate being the main culprit behind the bloated ERA. All of the main estimators -- FIP, xFIP, SIERA -- point to Biagini being at least a full run better than that mark would suggest. The strikeout and walk rates (7.3 K/9, 3.2 BB/9) aren't going to excite those in the fantasy game, but Biagini induces groundballs at a high rate (55.7 percent), throws four pitches (fastball-slider-curveball-changeup) and has already shown he can perform near a league-average level as a starter (4.36 FIP over 88 innings last season). He figures to have the inside track at the final spot in the Blue Jays' rotation entering spring training.
Biagini delivered a jaw-dropping performance in 2016; his numbers are by no means elite, but nobody could have expected that kind of performance from the Rule 5 draft pick. He was masterful at limiting the big inning and posted an outstanding 0.4 HR/9, which was the third-best mark among AL rookie relievers. Further, the righty posted a solid 6.4 percent walk rate and 11.5 percent swinging-strike rate. Biagini rarely pitched in high-leverage situations during the first half, but he racked up six holds over the final two months (eight holds total). There was some discussion about a possible return to a starting role for Biagini, but the Blue Jays later backtracked on that idea, suggesting he will remain in the bullpen. They will stretch him out during spring training, though, in case a move to the rotation is in the cards later in the season.
