2024 Fantasy Outlook
Clarke posted a 5.95 ERA and 1.61 WHIP over 59 innings out of Kansas City's bullpen in 2023. The 30-year-old right-hander tallied three saves and a career-high 12 holds for the Royals, but he had just as many home runs allowed (12) for a poor 1.9 HR/9 that was 6th-worst among qualified relievers. The 2015 third-rounder's 13.2 barrel percentage was highest among relief pitchers, though he did boast a career-best 24.5 percent strikeout rate after making his slider his primary offering (37 percent pitch usage). Clarke was recently traded to Milwaukee, where he figures to operate in middle relief for the 2024 season. Read Past Outlooks

Hoping for late-May return
Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said Wednesday that Clarke (knee) should return by late May, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Clarke had surgery in late March to repair meniscus damage in his right knee. He has yet to begin a throwing program and it's uncertain when he might be cleared to do so. Clarke is likely to be used in middle relief once he's healthy.

Possible trade piece?
According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Royals have received interest on the trade market for Clarke.
ANALYSIS
Clarke has 10 holds this season while often seeing high-leverage work for Kansas City, but his 6.00 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 49:19 K:BB is underwhelming, at best. The right-hander's 4.56 xERA paints a better picture, and he is coming off a solid campaign as he posted a 4.04 ERA last year. Still, he's hardly a prime trade target and is unlikely to command a notable return.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
Clarke broke through to the major leagues in 2019 and worked primarily as a starter. He posted a 5.31 ERA, buried by allowing 2.4 HR/9 across 84.2 innings. In 2020, his role changed thanks to the addition of Madison Bumgarner as he began the season in middle and long relief. He posted a passable 3.54 ERA, as a reliever, though his skills were far from spectacular, as he mustered only a 17:10 K:BB across 20.1 innings. Things only worsened once he was pushed back into the starting rotation after Bumgarner and Merrill Kelly landed on the injured list, as he logged a 5.09 ERA and 23:11 K:BB. Whether a starter or reliever, Clarke has been prone to the long ball, logging a 2.2 HR/9 across 128 total innings in the big leagues. Heading into 2021, Clarke projects to start the season as a long reliever and potential swing man.
