Larkin confirmed Thursday that he would sign a one-year, $1.8 million contract with Anadolu Efes of the Turkish Basketball Super League, freelance reporter David Pick reports.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old, who suited up in 54 regular-season tilts for the Celtics last season and averaged 4.3 points, 1.8 assists, 1.7 rebounds in 14.4 minutes per game, likely had opportunities from NBA teams to compete for a role as a depth point guard. It's less likely, however, that any offers Larkin might have received contained much guaranteed money, prompting him to head overseas for greater financial security. If Larkin shows well during his time in Europe, he might be able to secure more favorable offers stateside next summer.

Not thinking about NBA return
GFree Agent
May 22, 2022
Larkin is happy in Europe and is not thinking about returning to the NBA, according to Antonis Stroggylakis of EuroHoops.
ANALYSIS
Larkin expressed a desire to return to the NBA amid the pandemic crisis two years ago, but he has since changed his mind. "I grew up in America. I didn't know much about European basketball," he said. "To be here, to see the passion, to be in this atmosphere. To do the things that I've been able to accomplish here. I wouldn't trade this for the world. Even if I could've gone back to the NBA and signed for a max contract, I would much rather choose this. Being able to play in front of these fans, with this passion and experience this in my life. This has been amazing and I'm very happy with everything." Larkin spent the 2021-22 season playing for Anadolu Efes and has won the EuroLeague title in each of the last two campaigns.

2013
Larkin, the 18th overall pick of the 2013 draft, turned down a European offer of roughly $6 million over two years to sign a one year, guaranteed offer from Boston worth about $1.5 million. While the money is guaranteed, a roster spot was not, as Larkin at the time became the 16th guaranteed contract for Boston, which can only carry 15 players into the regular season. Of course, that all then changed with the Kyrie Irving trade. The three-for-one deal freed up two roster spots, greatly improving Larkin’s chances of making the squad. It was assumed that Larkin and newly signed German power forward Daniel Theis would battle it out for that last 15th roster spot, but both can breathe a little easier now. Still, the 5’11” Larkin will be facing a steep climb up the depth chart in order to see any playing time. All-Star Kyrie Irving will see the majority of the minutes at point guard, with defensive stalwart and 2015 first round pick Terry Rozier seeing the bulk of the backup minutes behind Irving. Marcus Smart, who averaged 4.6 assists per game last year, will also see time as the primary ball handler. As Larkin sits, he still may pine for the bigger money and minutes of his Spanish Baskonia days.
After a one-year stint with the 17-win Knicks, Larkin is now on his third team in three NBA seasons. He averaged 25 minutes in 76 games last season, starting 22 of them. His season averages were 6.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 0.5 three-pointers while shooting 45 percent from the field, 31 percent from three, and 78 percent from the charity stripe. Larkin is a fast change-of-pace point guard who is expected to come off the bench behind Jarrett Jack to run the pick-and-roll with efficiency and pester opposing guards for steals. At just 5-11 and 176 pounds, Larkin's diminutive size creates a defensive matchup liability against bigger guards. His 25 mpg last season were a career-high, but he didn't seize the opportunity he had with the downtrodden Knicks, often getting overlooked so the team could play other young players. Eventually, he was beaten out for rotation minutes last season by D-League call-up Langston Hughes. Regardless of his role last season, the Nets saw enough in Larkin to sign him to a two-year, $3 million deal. He has ample opportunity to earn significant minutes off the bench. His only competition being NBA career back-up Donald Sloan and un-drafted free agent Ryan Boatright.
Larkin was acquired from the Mavericks this offseason after a broken ankle suffered last summer limited him to only 48 games as a rookie. The 18th overall pick in 2013, Larkin's injury - coupled with a veteran laden Dallas team - stunted his early development, limiting him to just 2.8 points and 1.5 assists in 10 minutes per game last season. At just 5-11, 176 pounds, Larkin's size presents a disadvantage, but he's also extremely quick and possesses exceptional leaping ability. Following an encouraging summer league showing under new Knicks' coach Derek Fisher in July, Larkin will compete for reserve minutes at point guard this upcoming season. Between projected starter 32-year-old Jose Calderon and fellow reserve 37-year-old Pablo Prigioni, the 21-year-old Larkin has a great opportunity to take advantage of his youth to earn playing time heading into the future. As such, he's probably of most value in dynasty leagues but could thrust his way into consideration this season if the Knicks look for more energy out of their floor general.
The son of MLB Hall-of-Famer Barry Larkin, the speedster is hoping to establish a name for himself on the basketball court. The Mavs selected him in the first round and planned on him playing heavy minutes off the bench. Unfortunately, a broken ankle suffered in the offseason has slowed those plans. He's hoping to be back for the start of training camp.
