Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
Isaac is the great unknown of the Michigan running back corps, and 2016 will be one of his last chances to make a name for himself. After sitting out in 2014 due to transfer rules, Isaac struggled to get on the field in 2015 and did not suit up for the final six games per coach Jim Harbaugh’s decision. However, Isaac did flash the best per-carry production among running backs last season, averaging 6.83 YPC--over two full yards more than starter De’Veon Smith. At 6-3, 228, Isaac has the strength and frame to convert in short yardage and goal line situations when called upon. Isaac may be more talented than Smith, but Michigan has a crowded backfield and Smith seems entrenched as the starter, so Isaac may be getting most of his work in garbage time early in the season when Michigan opens against three non-conference opponents.
Isaac sat out of the 2014 season after transferring to Michigan from USC following his freshman season. He was buried on the Trojans’ depth chart as a true freshman in 2013 behind the likes of Buck Allen, Tre Madden, and Silas Redd, but still managed to rack up 236 yards and two touchdowns on 40 carries (5.9 YPC). Isaac is built like a classic Big 10 back at 6-3, 240, but the Wolverines have a stable of backs that’ll be competing for carries. As it stands, Derrick Green, De’Veon Smith, and Drake Johnson (working his way back from an ACL tear) are all proven commodities in Michigan’s backfield that will all warrant carries. Much of Michigan’s carry distribution, at least early in the season, will likely depend on which back (or backs) separates himself from the pack during fall camp. Isaac has the size, pedigree, and potential to be a productive back, but he’ll need to outplay the likes of Smith and Green to earn a workhorse role.
