Grupe is small even by kicker standards, listed at 5-7, 156. That didn't stop him from catching on with the Saints as an undrafted rookie last year, nor did it stop him from making six of nine kicks from 50-plus yards. He also made each of his 40 PATs, though shorter field goals were a problem area with Grupe missing two of 12 tries inside 30 yards. He tied for eighth among kickers in fantasy scoring and figures to remain the Saints' starter in 2024, with potential benefits including home games played in a dome and a head coach (Dennis Allen) who routinely ranks among the least aggressive in going for it on fourth down. Grupe hit two field-goal tries and all six PATs during the Saints' regular-season finale, thus wrapping up his rookie campaign with six straight made field goals. The undrafted product out of Notre Dame won New Orleans' starting kicker job over veteran Wil Lutz this preseason, and, while the rookie was far from perfect, he made a solid impression with 70 total kicking conversions. He also went 16-for-18 on field-goal tries of 39 yards or less. Grupe will look to improve his consistency as a long-range kicker during the 2024 season.

Grupe was a longshot to make the roster when he signed with the Saints as an undrafted rookie free agent this spring, but he impressed the team throughout training camp and they ended up trading Wil Lutz to the Broncos. That leaves Grupe as the Saints' kicker entering Week 1, benefiting from home games played in a dome as well as a favorable NFC South schedule.
