Struggles with final round 77
July 10, 2022
Cabrera Bello recorded a seven-over 77 in the final round of the Genesis Scottish Open to finish tied for 36th place.
ANALYSIS
Cabrera Bello started the final round in solo second place but had a Sunday to forget with just two birdies, seven bogeys and a double bogey. After starting the tournament with three consecutive under-par rounds, his closing 77 was the worst round of the day. In 15 worldwide starts this year, Cabrera Bello has missed eight cuts with just one top-35 finish.

After making the playoffs each of his first three seasons as a full-time member, the 2019-20 campaign was quite the disappointment for the man from Spain. He only had three top-25s and none in his final eight starts. Cabrera Bello ranked outside the top 100 in every strokes gained category, so all parts of his game need work.
Cabrera Bello joined the PGA Tour in 2017 and in his three full seasons on the PGA Tour, he's been very productive. He hasn't taken the next step in his game in that time, but he hasn't regressed either. He's settled-in to a cushy spot on the money list between spots 50 and 80 and there's no indication that this season will end any differently. With that in mind, his price is too high in salary cap formats, but he obviously has value in every other format.
It feels like Cabrera Bello has been around for 20 years, always on the brink of greatness, yet never breaking through. In reality, he's actually only played full time on the PGA Tour for two seasons now. He's played very well during those two seasons, but he hasn't taken that next step yet. That next step would be either a PGA Tour win or better yet a major win, but something always seems to get in the way with Cabrera Bello. On the bright side, since joining the PGA Tour two years ago, he's played 19 and 20 events, which is better than the typical 15-16 events that most transplants play. He's also put up solid earnings numbers, posting $1.9 in his first season and $2.4 million last season. It's the $2.4 million that makes it hard to pull the trigger on him his year though as unless he finds a win somewhere on the schedule, it's unlikely that he'll significantly improve upon that number. Cabrera Bello has plenty of value in draft formats, but not in salary cap formats this season.
Cabrera Bello impressed in his first full season on the PGA Tour with four top-10s and eight top-25s in just 19 starts. More impressive was the placement of those top-10s. Cabrera Bello finished in the top-5 at The Players and the Open Championship. At just 33, there's still time for Cabrera Bello to improve and if he can find another gear at the big events, he can take the next step in his career. His number from last season leaves just enough room for improvement and as such, he's definitely a guy to consider this season.
The Spainiar really became known to American golf fans this past year, cracking the top 30 in the OWGR. He'll be in all the majors and WGCs, and his value will be determined by how many other events he enters. He hasn't indicated his plans as yet.
