Wins LIV Golf Hong Kong in playoff
March 10, 2024
Ancer carded a two-over 72 in the final round at LIV Golf Hong Kong to finish 13-under for the tournament. He beat Paul Casey and Cameron Smith in a three-way playoff to capture the individual event.
ANALYSIS
Ancer was spectacular over the first two rounds, carding scores of 63 and 62 to enter Sunday with a five-shot lead. He hadn't made a bogey over the first 40 holes of the tournament, but finished the final round with three bogeys and just one birdie that allowed the field to catch up. In the playoff hole against Casey and Smith, Ancer was able to shake off the nerves to score a birdie on hole 18 to capture his first LIV Golf individual title. His win in Hong Kong propelled Ancer to fifth place in the individual standings with 47.30 points.

At No. 25 OWGR as of this writing, Ancer should stay inside the top-50 at year's end and qualify for the Masters.
While it's reasonable to call 2020-21 a season full of surprises, it could also be considering the year of the breakthrough win. Ancer was one of many players that picked up either their first win on the PGA Tour or a win that was a long time coming. In Ancer's case, he was in his 5th full season on the PGA Tour and he'd had plenty of success, including three runner-up finishes, but that win proved elusive. That changed in August at the St. Jude Invitational. That win turned what was already a solid season into a spectacular one. Ancer should continue to improve, and getting that win in 2020-21 is bound to help him the next time he's in contention. The future is bright for Ancer, and for draft leagues he might be a late-1st-round pick, but in salary cap leagues he's just too expensive this season.
Ancer has made quite the impression in his first three years on the PGA Tour. Although he's been unable to find a victory in his short time on the PGA Tour, he's put himself in contention on several occasions. Even though this past season was shortened by the pandemic, Ancer managed to post a career high in earnings. HIs number is set pretty high for this season and if you take him, it'll be based all on potential, but Ancer looks like someone who could continue to improve for the foreseeable future.
Ancer ended the 2017-2018 with a flurry and he picked-up right where he left off to start the 2018-2019 season. When the calendar flipped to 2019, he lost a little steam, but he managed to play well here and there on his way to a career high in earnings. This past season was just his third on the PGA Tour and Ancer is yet to find a win, but it's only a matter of time. His number for this season is reasonable and he's definitely worth a look in salary cap formats as he should continue to improve this year.
To say Ancer's career on the PGA Tour got off to a slow start, would be an understatement. Ancer missed the cut in his first nine starts in 2016 and although he went on to make the cut in six of his last 10 starts that season, he never found his footing. His second time around, however, went much better. Although he didn't miss his first nine cuts last season, he did get off to a bit of a slow start with only one top-25 in his first seven starts. Ancer, however, did more than find his footing over the final couple months of the season as he posted three top-10s in his final eight starts. Two of those were top-5s where he actually contended. Ancer held the 54-hole lead at the Dell Technologies Championship and although he faltered in the final round, it should end up being a quality learning experience. Ancer looks like the real deal and he should continue to improve, but how much he'll improve this season is the question. He's got some upside, but at this price, there's plenty of risk as well.
Ancer's rookie campaign on the PGA Tour during the 2015-16 season didn't go as planned, missing 13 of 19 cuts to ultimately finish 190th in the FedExCup standings and lose his card as a result. A solid bounceback effort on the Web.com Tour this past season included 18 of 23 made cuts and seven top-10s, placing third on the regular season money list and re-earning his PGA Tour card for 2017-18. Another bright spot for Ancer included a made cut during his lone start at the PGA Tour level, posting a T55 at the OHL Classic in November of 2016.
