Yahoo DFS Hockey: Saturday Picks

Yahoo DFS Hockey: Saturday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Hockey series.

Saturday's all-day NHL slate begins at 1:00 p.m. EDT and features 12 games. There's no shortage of selection available, but the players below stand out as the best and worst values:

GOALIE

Matt Murray, PIT at MIN ($33): Murray really hasn't played all that well until recently, but Pittsburgh's gifted offense has propelled him to a 7-0-1 record. He has finally starting to uphold his end of the bargain after holding each of his past two opponents to a goal apiece, so it likely won't be long until Murray's price rightfully rises into the high $30s. Since that increase hasn't happened yet, take this chance to enjoy another probable win. Murray will likely have some margin for error here considering Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk sports a 3.38 GAA and .896 save percentage.

GOALIE TO AVOID

Braden Holtby, WAS at MON ($40): Holtby's last start was an ugly one, as he was pulled after allowing five goals in 35 minutes Thursday in Vancouver. That same night, Edmonton's talented offense showed signs of stirring with a 5-4 win over the Stars. The risk of a repeat performance from both parties is too great to justify spending $40 on Holtby when no other player in this slate costs more than $36.

CENTER

Boo Nieves, NYR at MON ($16): Nieves displayed tremendous offensive instincts in Thursday's season debut, dishing out three assists while skating on an offensively inclined line with Michael Grabner and Pavel Buchnevich. The 23-year-old center won't stay this cheap for long if he keeps producing anywhere near that pace, and he gets a nice opportunity to stay hot against a Canadiens team that's been outscored 38-17 in a 2-7-1 start.

CENTER TO AVOID

Brock Nelson, NYI at NSH ($17): Nelson's unsustainable shooting percentage is the only thing propping up his value. The career 12.5 percent shooter is converting at a 27.8 percent rate with five goals on 18 shots, but he's otherwise been a nonfactor with just one assist in a mere 14:20 of ice time per game. Lighting the lamp won't be easy against a Predators team that's allowing just 2.56 goals per game, so expect a dud from the overpriced pivot.

WINGS

Taylor Hall, NJ vs. ARI ($21): Hall's playing above a point-per-game pace with nine in eight contests despite scoring on just one of 25 shots. The 2010 first overall pick will have a great chance to close the gap on his career 10.2 percent shooting percentage, as Arizona's subpar netminders have been hemorrhaging goals. With the Coyotes allowing 4.40 goals per game, anything short of a multi-point showing from Hall would be a disappointment given the situation.

Anthony Mantha, DET at FLA ($15): Mantha's mix of skill and affordability make him a low-risk, high-reward pick against a Panthers team that's allowed 3.67 goals on a league-leading 36.2 shots per game. He showed plenty of offensive promise with 17 goals and 36 points in 60 games as a rookie last season and is off to an even better start this year with four goals, four assists and a pair of three-point performances through 11 contests. Mantha's also fired multiple shots on net in all but one game and has arguably the best combination of ability and opportunity among players priced at $15 or less in this slate.

WINGS TO AVOID

Brian Gibbons, NJ vs. ARI ($17): While his team will likely thrive against Arizona, Gibbons isn't a good play at this price regardless of opponent. The career AHLer has gotten off to a lucky start with three goals in eight games, but that success is unlikely to last considering he has skated over 15 minutes only twice while firing more than two shots on goal in a game just once.

Jakob Silfverberg, ANH at TB ($20): Silfverberg can't be trusted at this price until he gets off the schneid. He still hasn't lit the lamp this season and his slump has led to reduced ice time, playing fewer than 16 minutes in each of his past two games after seeing over 19 per contest during his first seven. There's also a strong chance that Silfverberg's minus-3 rating will further decline against a Lightning offense that ranks second in the NHL with 4.00 goals per game.

DEFENSEMEN

Duncan Keith, CHI at COL ($20): Only one of Keith's seven points through 20 games has come with the extra man, but he's likely to pick up the pace before long after notching at least 15 power-play points in each of the past four seasons. This matchup with a Colorado penalty kill that's operating at just 77.8 percent gives Keith a terrific opportunity to start making more contributions on special teams. With Chicago heavily favored to nab the road win, Keith's a safe choice with potential for much more.

Brandon Montour, ANH at TB ($17): Montour's stepped up since Cam Fowler (knee) joined Sami Vatanen (shoulder) on injured reserve, recording a goal and two assists in 23:38 of ice time per game over three subsequent contests. In addition to playing more at even strength, Anaheim's most offensively gifted healthy blueliner has also been moved up to the top power-play unit since Fowler's injury. His heavy offensive responsibilities should lead to plenty of high-quality opportunities against a Lightning team that's allowing 34.5 shots per game, giving Montour a tremendous ceiling for a $17 defenseman.

DEFENSEMEN TO AVOID

Kevin Shattenkirk, NYR at MON ($22): Shattenkirk's been awful in his own end all season with a minus-7 rating, and now his offense has disappeared as well. He's been held without a point in three consecutive games while firing just one shot on goal with a minus-2 rating over that span. Meanwhile, the Canadiens have outshot their past three opponents by a combined 128-100 margin.

Rasmus Ristolainen, BUF vs. SJ ($20): San Jose's 89.5 percent penalty kill is fourth in the league and second only to Los Angeles' 92.3 percent among teams in action Saturday. Ristolainen has scored 48 of his 90 points since the start of the 2015-16 campaign on the power play while posting a minus-34 rating over that span, so the downsides of using him in this matchup are obvious.
