Roster casualty in sweeping Bellator cuts
WelterweightOther
February 20, 2018
Gonzalez will no longer compete under the Bellator MMA banner, as the promotion confirmed a long list of roster cuts that included the veteran early this week, Guilherme Cruz of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear if Gonzalez had his contract expire or was simply given his release papers, but he's one of the most prominent of 13 fighters to be removed from the roster this week. Gonzalez, 34, sports a 7-2 record under the Bellator banner, with his only losses coming to very respectable opponents in Michael Page, and most recently, Lorenz Larkin. He even has a win against top UFC prospect Curtis Millender back in 2015. Gonzalez and the remainder of the jobless fighters will look to catch on with other promotions, with one of the most attractive options being PFL's upcoming tournaments that award a $1 million prize to the winner. Other fighters left without a roster spot after the announcement include Alexis Dufresne, Ben Reiter, Francis Carmont, Francisco France, Georgi Karakhanyan, Kendall Grove, Kevin Casey, L.C. Davis, Mike Rhode, Philipe Lins, Steve Garcia and Steve Kozola.

Drops decision against Lorenz Larkin in the Bellator 193 main event
WelterweightOther
January 26, 2018
Gonzalez lost to Lorenz Larkin via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27) at Bellator 193 on Friday in Temecula, Calif.
ANALYSIS
Over the course of his Bellator career, Gonzalez has proven that he is a game competitor. He has made some high profile opponents look terrible against him. However, he is rarely able to pull out the win in these fights against top competition. This was another example. His defensive style gave Larkin a lot of trouble. With that being said, Gonzalez simply did not have enough offense to win this fight. He will continue to fight Bellator, but, at this point, it looks like he will not get over the hump against higher level fighters. Gonzalez also missed weight for the third-straight fight even though Bellator made the bout at a 180-pound catchweight.
Added to Bellator 193
WelterweightOther
November 8, 2017
Gonzalez will face Lorenz Larkin in a welterweight fight at Bellator 193 on Jan. 26, Damon Martin of MMA Weekly reports.
ANALYSIS
The 34-year-old, who owns a 27-14 overall record, is looking to string together his third straight victory. He's proven to be a difficult matchup during his time with Bellator, losing just one of his eight matches under the label. Gonzalez will face an ex-UFC fighter in Larkin who has lost each of his first two fights with Bellator.
Catches Brennan Ward with third round submission at Bellator 182
WelterweightOther
August 25, 2017
Gonzalez defeated Brennan Ward via submission (guillotine choke) at 1:02 of Round 3 at Bellator 182 on Friday in Verona, N.Y.
ANALYSIS
Gonzalez is a difficult fighter to look good against. Since 2014, he has only lost two fights, against Paul Daley (kickboxing) and Michael Page. In both of those fights, he made a heavily favored opponent look vulnerable before losing. He was well on the way towards doing the same against Ward. Ward normally comes out like a house on fire, but he was much more tactical with his approach here. He went to his wrestling early and often against Gonzalez. Going into the third round, Gonzalez was down two rounds. Ward went for a takedown, and Gonzalez latched on the fight-ending guillotine choke. This is a big win for his career in Bellator.
Takes decision over Brandon Girtz at Bellator 174
WelterweightOther
March 3, 2017
Gonzalez defeated Brandon Girtz via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-27, 30-26) at Bellator 174 in Thackerville, Okla. on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Gonzalez, as he is want to do, did just enough to win this fight. On the feet, he had a clear advantage, but he did not really pull the trigger until the last round. Girtz was able to consistently attempt takedowns. However, Gonzalez did a great job of threatening with guillotine chokes and getting back to his feet. In the third round, he turned it on and hurt his opponent multiple times. Gonzalez finally broke through with a big win in Bellator after coming close against Paul Daley and Michael Page.
Drops tough decision against Michael Page
WelterweightOther
November 19, 2016
Gonzalez lost to Michael Page via split decision (29-28, 27-30, 29-28) at Bellator 165 on Saturday in San Jose, Calif.
ANALYSIS
Gonzalez was a big underdog after Page had several highlight-reel wins in the Bellator cage. He ended up approaching this with an ultra-conservative strategy. Page, who is mostly a counter fighter, was left with anything to counter. The fight was also entirely without action. Throughout the fight, fans showered both fighters with boos.
