Chokes out Bryan Barberena
MiddleweightUFC
March 16, 2024
Meerschaert defeated Bryan Barberena via technical submission (rear-naked choke) at 4:23 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
These two entered having combined to lose five straight fights, meaning the loser here would almost certainly be handed his walking papers. To Meerschaert's credit, he didn't mess around and leaned on his biggest strength, which also happens to be Barberena's biggest weakness. Gerald fired off seven takedown attempts, landing three, good for 5:03 worth of control time. He kept Bryan pinned to the mat for long stretches at a time before choking him out late in Round 2. Meerschaert has major durability issues, and at age 36, he will be in all sorts of trouble if forced to stand-and-trade with his opposition, but this result likely ensures he'll get at least one more fight with the UFC.

Barberena up next
MiddleweightUFC
January 23, 2024
Meerschaert is scheduled to compete in a middleweight fight against Bryan Barberena at the UFC's Vegas event on March 16, per Damon Martin of MMAFighting.com.
ANALYSIS
Meerschaert will look to bounce back in 2024. He went 0-2 during 2023, with losses to Joe Pyfer and Andre Petroski. Barberena is trying to do the same, having gone 0-2 that year as well.
Falls just short in split decision
MiddleweightUFC
August 20, 2023
Meerschaert lost to Andre Petroski via split decision (28-29, 28-29, 29-28) at UFC 292 on Saturday in Boston.
ANALYSIS
Meerschaert picks up his third loss in his last four trips to the Octagon, but it's not as if he wasn't competitive as a (+190) betting underdog. He won the overall significant striking battle 76-to-57 and was particularly dominant in Round 3 after securing his first successful takedown. Still, the more damaging shots were landed by Petroski, especially a Round 2 knockdown that Meerschaert barely survived. The 35-year-old finds himself in must-win territory his next time out if he wishes to stick around with the company.
Set to face Petroski
MiddleweightUFC
June 2, 2023
Meerschaert will take on Andre Petroski in a middleweight bout at UFC 292 on Aug. 19 in Boston, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports Friday.
ANALYSIS
Meerschaert is coming off a loss at the hands of Joe Pyfer, who disposed of him via TKO (punches) in the first round of an early April fight. Since then, he's also lost a grappling match to Pyfer. He'll be looking to get back on the winning side of the octagon, but will have to do it against an opponent in Petroski who hasn't lost a UFC fight in his career.
Starched by Joe Pyfer
MiddleweightUFC
April 8, 2023
Meerschaert lost to Joe Pyfer via TKO (punches) at 3:15 of Round 1 at UFC 287 on Saturday in Miami.
ANALYSIS
Meerschaert is a grizzled veteran with more than 50 professional fights under his belt, but a matchup with a hard-hitting finisher such as Pyfer is a recipe for potential disaster, as we saw here. Gerald got clipped with a left hand to the chin and then a right hand to the forehead which sent him stumbling to the mat. Referee Marc Goddard gave him plenty of time to recover, but countless follow-up strikes from Pyfer closed the show. Now 35 years of age, Meerschaert is 4-2 in his past half-dozen fights, but three of his past four losses have come via knockout. His durability, or lack thereof, is most definitely a concerning moving forward.
Booked for UFC 287
MiddleweightUFC
January 25, 2023
Meerschaert will take on Joe Pyfer in a middleweight matchup at UFC 287 on April 8, Jake Noecker of The Scrap News reports.
ANALYSIS
Meerschaert has won four of his last five fights, with all victories coming by way of submission. He now takes on Pyfer, who does have one submission loss in his 12-fight pro career, plus just a 50 percent takedown defense in three UFC appearances (including Contender Series). Pyfer, who is riding a two-fight winning streak, likely has the more explosive hands, but all bets are off if this fight gets to the mat.
