Last year was easily Bowman's worst campaign since joining Hendrick Motorsports. The driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet only nabbed 10 Top-10 finishes, no wins and wound up a distant 20th-place in the driver points. Those were all career-low marks for Bowman since moving to Hendrick in 2018. We would like to remain optimistic about a rebound for this driver and team, but frankly Bowman's end to 2023 does not instill us with a lot of confidence going forward. With just two Top-10 finishes during the 10-race playoffs and ending on finishes of 35th-, 19th-, 32nd- and 17th-place, this is a race team entering 2024 with a lot of questions to answer. Blake Harris remains the crew chief for Bowman, for now. His mere 65 starts of experience as a Cup Series crew chief will be coming into focus in the next year. Bowman finished fourth in the Echopark Texas Grand Prix NASCAR Cup Series race at Circuit of the Americas Sunday afternoon.
ANALYSIS
Bowman continued his good record at Circuit of the Americas. The driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet started mid-pack after a disappointing qualifying effort. Still, Bowman would patiently race his way through the field to break into the Top 10 by stage 3. The long green-flag run to the finish would see the Top 3 take off and leave the field with a big gap to Bowman. He would hold Tyler Reddick at bay to claim the strong fourth-place finish. It was Bowman's third Top-5 finish of the season.

Bowman had a perplexing and inconsistent season in 2022. The Hendrick Motorsports veteran managed to snag a win early last season at Las Vegas, but he'd struggle to a three-season low of just 12 Top-10 finishes. Bowman's average finish would balloon 1.5 spots to 16.7 over the previous season. We're sure struggles adjusting to the new generation stock car were much of the problem. To make things even worse, Bowman sustained a concussion in at Texas early in the Chase playoffs and would miss five of the final six events, eliminating him from championship contention. Bowman will look to put all that behind him in the upcoming season and with a new crew chief to boot. Greg Ives has moved on and Blake Harris will take over crew chief responsibilities for the No. 48 team. With last season ending the way it did and a team shakeup, it's difficult to imagine a big rebound in the offing for this driver and team.
The Hendrick Motorsports veteran was a bit of an enigma last season. While he did win a career-best four races and 16 Top-10 finishes, he lacked the week-to-week consistency that led to his average finish slipping to 15.1 for the campaign. That inconsistency kept Bowman from a deep drive into the Chase playoffs as he would finish a distant 14th in the championship scramble. While there's lots of good there's also some bad to examine. Curiously, Bowman struggled on intermediate ovals which for most of his career have been his best tracks. Equally curious, the driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet had his most success last season on the short tracks, which to this point have not at all been his best ovals. It's difficult to forecast Bowman, but we believe the best odds are that he remains in neutral as we move into the Next-Gen car in 2022. He and Greg Ives will have to sort some things out and that could take a few races.
The incremental improvement for Bowman continued last season. The Hendrick Motorsports veteran posted his second-career victory (Fontana) and grabbed a career-best 15 Top-10 finishes. It would all add up to a deep run into the playoffs and sixth-place finish in the final driver standings of 2020. The week-to-week consistency still wasn't there, but this driver and team would tend more to go on mini hot streaks during the season. The car number switches from No. 88 to No. 48 this season, but the team remains much the same. Greg Ives will continue guiding Bowman as crew chief and he will inherit Jimmie Johnson's old sponsor, Ally Financial. We expect Bowman to continue taking steps this year. His first multi-win campaign could be in the cards and higher Top 10 totals as well. This driver and team present a lot of upside in draft or auction style fantasy racing leagues.
Season two at Hendrick Motorsports saw some noticeable improvement in the No. 88 team and Bowman. The 26-year-old driver grabbed his first-career victory with a thrilling win at Chicago, and he posted career-bests with seven Top-5 and 12 Top-10 finishes. It all added up to an impressive 12th-place finish in the driver point standings, which was also another career-best mark. Once again Bowman will be paired with crew chief Greg Ives to see if they can take the next steps in his development. The duo ended last season well with a pair of Top 10's in the last three events, so momentum is on their side coming into 2020. Bowman has a lot of unrealized potential, but just how much is hard to gage. It's a contract season for him, so the motivation to race hard will be with him throughout this upcoming campaign.
Bowman's return to full-time Monster Energy Cup Series racing was a bit of a mixed bag last season. The highs were definitely offset by the lows. The driver of the No. 88 Chevrolet had some big shoes to fill in the way of the retired Dale Earnhardt Jr. Bowman labored to no wins, three Top-5 and 11 Top-10 finishes. He would be the first driver eliminated from the Chase and wind up 16th in the final driver standings of 2018. Bowman will once again be paired with crew chief, Greg Ives, and the two will look to move the bar higher in 2019. A part of their problems last season was the slow start and slow adaptation to the new Chevy Camaro. Now that one full season is behind them, that can no longer be an excuse. Bowman now needs to show the flashes of brilliance he had at Pocono, Dover, Talladega and the Charlotte Roval were no fluke. We don't believe they were. This driver and team are poised to have a much better 2019 season.
With the retirement of Dale Earnhardt Jr. it will be a new day at Hendrick Motorsports. In the void of the iconic driver a new face will be in the popular No. 88 Chevrolet this season. Bowman steps up from Hendrick's test driver role and into real racing and competition. He spent much of last year testing, but did manage a couple Xfinity Series starts with a surprising victory at Charlotte. Bowman impressed in his relief starts for Earnhardt in 2016. He bagged three Top-10 finishes in just 10 starts and showed good utility and talent racing in relief. Now that the No. 88 car belongs to him, he'll be paired with crew chief Greg Ives. The same dynamite sponsorship package that Earnhardt enjoyed will return and support Bowman. It's a situation set up for success. His 81 starts of experience will begin to pay dividends, and we would not be surprised to see Bowman break the 12 Top-10 finish plateau.
The young JR Motorsports driver made great use of his part-time schedule in NASCAR's top division last season. Bowman made 10 starts in relief of medically-sidelined Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the No. 88 Chevrolet. In those efforts he claimed his first-career pole position (Phoenix), his first Top-10 finishes (Chicago, Kansas and Phoenix) and actually dropped jaws wide open with his dominating 194-laps led from the pole performance at Phoenix late last season. Bowman also made some part-time starts for JR Motorsports' Xfinity Series team, claiming seven Top-10 finishes in just nine starts. While the only Monster Energy Cup Series plans to this point is for Bowman to race one of the Hendrick cars in the season-opening Clash at Daytona exhibition race, there are no current plans for him to compete at NASCAR's top level. Although he is a young face to watch closely as a door could open any day for this talented youngster.
This team was one of the more successful multi-driver lineups in the Xfinity Series last year. Harvick grabbed two wins for the team, and the other drivers all combined to nab 19 Top-10 finishes in the No. 88 Chevrolet last season. The lineup and starts should remain much the same in 2016, but gone is Ben Rhodes and Josh Berry, and in are Bowman and Elliott. The strong only get stronger in this sense. With this driver lineup of experience and youthful skill, we expect more wins in the upcoming season and more Top 10’s. Earnhardt failed to reach victory lane in his four starts last year, and that should certainly change this year. Bowman should make 9 starts for this team this season.
Signed with RAB Racing in January 2013 to drive the No. 99 Toyota and race for the Rookie of the Year in the Nationwide Series. Bowman was the 2012 Rookie of the Year in the ARCA Series after four victories and a fourth-place finish in the standings of that series.

Two NASCAR Cup Series teams failed twice in Daytona 500 pre-qualifying inspection Wednesday, resulting in crew member ejections and the loss of pit-stall selection for Thursday's 150-mile qualifying races.
