Aidan O'Connell

25-Year-Old QuarterbackQB
Las Vegas Raiders
2024 Fantasy Outlook
O’Connell will battle Gardner Minshew to start this season for the Raiders. A 2023 fourth-round pick, O’Connell began last season as the No. 3 QB only to be named the starter Week 9 over both Jimmy Garoppolo and backup Brian Hoyer after coach Josh McDaniels was fired. O’Connell’s arm is merely average, and while he had his moments, he was not prolific. He ranked 28th in on-target percentage (68.5) for a 62.1 completion percentage that ranked 27th. And it’s not like he threw a ton of deep passes -- 50.1 percent of his attempts came within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage (4th most) with only 8.7 percent going 20-plus yards (22nd). His 6.5 YPA ranked 25th, and he threw just 12 TD passes in 11 games. O’Connell also is immobile and offers no rushing upside -- zero scramble yards last season. Minshew, who signed a two-year $25 million contract after 13 starts for the Colts, is more efficient and at least offers scrambling upside. Other than Davante Adams, the surrounding talent isn’t much for whoever starts (though the team has two quality tight ends in Michael Mayer and first-round pick Brock Bowers), and both QBs have to learn the scheme of new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, who was fired by the Bears after fielding one of the league’s worst passing offenses the last two years. Remains set for QB battle
QBLas Vegas Raiders
April 29, 2024
O'Connell remains in position to compete with Gardner Minshew for the starting job this offseason, after the Raiders refrained from selecting a rookie quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft, Mark Anderson of the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Las Vegas was an oft-theorized candidate to add a QB in April's draft, but six signal-callers ultimately went off the board before the team's first-round selection at No. 13 overall, which became playmaking tight end Brock Bowers. The team invested second- and third-round selections in offensive linemen Jackson Powers-Johnson and Delmar Glaze, putting whoever wins the 2024 starting gig in a better position for success. O'Connell completed 213 of 343 pass attempts for 2,218 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions across 10 starts last season, which is solid rookie numbers for a fourth-round pick, but Minshew boasts enough experience that this offseason should play out as a true competition.

Gets competition for top job
QBLas Vegas Raiders
March 11, 2024
O'Connell will still get a chance to compete for the Raiders' starting quarterback job next season after the team signed Gardner Minshew on Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Minshew posted solid but not spectacular numbers last season for the Colts after replacing the injured Anthony Richardson under center, but O'Connell also acquitted himself well as a rookie in 2023 after taking over the offense in Las Vegas midway through the campaign. They may not be the only two names in the mix, however, as the Raiders might also consider investing another pick at the position in this year's QB-heavy draft after taking O'Connell with a fourth-rounder last April.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
O'Connell turned a preferred walk-on spot at Purdue into a pair of second-team All-Big Ten honors by the time he left, completing 635 of 939 pass attempts for 7,202 yards and 50 touchdowns versus 24 picks in 24 games over his final two seasons with the Boilermakers. The Raiders subsequently spent a fourth-round pick on O'Connell (who will be 25 years old by the time Week 1 arrives) in the 2023 NFL Draft, and coach Josh McDaniels likely views O'Connell as a developmental project behind starter Jimmy Garoppolo, with veteran Brian Hoyer's experience probably giving him the edge for primary backup duties.
