Brian Thomas

21-Year-Old Wide ReceiverWR
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Thomas was a late-rising prospect, with his stock largely driven by a 1,177-yard, 17-TD junior season and them a standout performance at the 2024 Scouting Combine. He had only 720 yards and seven touchdowns over his previous two seasons at LSU, even though he made nine starts as a true freshman after coming in as a four-star recruit. Being part of the same class as mega prospect Malik Nabers was one factor in Thomas' lack of volume prior to 2023, though the other guys they competed with for WR snaps/targets were mostly late-round picks (Trey Palmer, Kayshon Boutte) or non-prospects (Jaray Jenkins, Jack Bech) and Heisman-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels helped everyone in 2022-23. Even the 17-TD season saw Thomas sitting 41 targets and 392 yards shy of Nabers, with a 21.8 percent target share (compared to Nabers' 31.9). While the on-field production thus raises questions about his ability to command targets, Thomas went 23rd overall to Jacksonville after running a 4.33 40-yard dash at 6-3, 209. He also did reasonably well in his other combine drills with a 38.5-inch vertical and 126-inch broad jump, and he's slightly on the young side for a rookie (turning 22 in November). It is possible that Thomas ends up more useful to the Jaguars than fantasy managers, as he and Gabe Davis could spend a lot of time clearing out safeties for WR Christian Kirk, TE Evan Engram and RB Travis Etienne. On the other hand, Thomas has the physical traits one looks for in a true No. 1 WR, giving him a much better best-case scenario than players like Kirk and Davis. Read Past Outlooks

The Jaguars selected Thomas in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 23rd overall.
ANALYSIS
Jacksonville managed to trade back from 17 and still get the No. 4 receiver in the class in Thomas. With Calvin Ridley gone, a Brandon Aiyuk trade not materializing, and Gabe Davis checking in as the only free-agent addition at wideout, receiver was a need in Duval. Thomas comes to Jacksonville after a stellar junior season at LSU in which he led the nation in receiving touchdowns (17) and caught 68 of 89 targets for 1,177 yards (13.2 YPT). He's a lanky wideout at 6-foot-3, 209 pounds with blazing straight-line speed (4.33 40). It's worth noting that Thomas never had more than 361 yards in a season before his breakout, and that he played with a Heisman-winning quarterback and alongside Malik Nabers. Thomas fits nicely as a vertical option in this offense, but Davis, Christian Kirk and Evan Engram threaten his target ceiling for now. The LSU star could be explosive on a per-target basis as a rookie, but his viability in all fantasy formats will depend on just that, because a high catch volume appears unlikely with his profile.

Tabbed as top-10 pick in mock draft
WRFree Agent
April 24, 2024
The Athletic posted its final mock Wednesday of the 2024 NFL Draft, which features Thomas landing with the Jets with the No. 10 overall pick.
ANALYSIS
As has been the case in the majority of mock drafts, Thomas didn't come off the board until after fellow wide receivers Marvin Harrison, Malik Nabers and Rome Odunze. The mock draft also had tight end Brock Bowers go ninth, leaving The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt to select Thomas with the 10th overall pick for the Jets. While pick 10 is just about the upper bound of Thomas' realistic range, the wide receiver prospect out of LSU is expected to be a first-round pick when the 2024 NFL Draft begins Thursday.
