Poised for backup role
With the Colts not taking a running back in the 2024 Draft, Sermon and Evan Hull are the primary backups to starter Jonathan Taylor, Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star reports.
ANALYSIS
It was a mild surprise that the Colts didn't draft a running back or sign a prominent undrafted free agent to compete for the starting role. It's possible the Colts will sign a veteran free agent this spring for depth, but at this point Sermon could have a prominent backup role. He rushed 35 times, including 17 carries in Week 15, for 160 yards to go along with three catches for 13 yards with Indy last season.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Responding well to benching
Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel noticed an "extra aggressiveness" from Sermon in practice after he was benched for the season opener, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports. "(Sermon) showed, I think, all of us that he really wants an opportunity, which he'll get this Sunday," McDaniels said.
ANALYSIS
Sermon was surprisingly inactive in Week 1, but the rookie third-round pick is set to make his debut in Week 2. San Francisco's backfield is now headlined by fellow rookie Elijah Mitchell, with JaMycal Hasty also on hand, in the wake of Raheem Mostert's season-ending knee injury. Sermon has responded positively to his benching rather than sulking or complaining, which bodes well for his chances of getting in the coaching staff's good graces and growing his role moving forward.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2022
2021
It was no real shock last season when a rookie stole the spotlight in the San Francisco
backfield. What might have been a surprise was which rookie running back did the deed. Taken
in the third round out of Ohio State, Sermon was overshadowed by sixth-round pick Elijah
Mitchell, who impressed his coaches more in the preseason and then took over lead-back
duties when Raheem Mostert got injured. Sermon did show what he could do in Week 4 when
both Mostert and Mitchell were sidelined, cranking out 89 rushing yards on 19 carries, but he
then saw only 12 touches the rest of the year, missing a game as a healthy scratch and then
because of an ankle injury. Sermon was waived by the 49ers in August, however, and quickly claimed by Philadelphia, where he'll provide his new team with backfield depth behind Miles Sanders, Kenneth Gainwell and Boston Scott.
